As a practice with such a long-standing in the community, our team of friendly and highly trained dental professionals have been welcoming children to The Dentist for decades. We know how important it is to make our youngest patients feel safe, comfortable, and at home here. We also know how important it is to give their oral health a good start in life.
While we treat every patient as an individual, we have found that there are questions that frequently arise when it comes to dental care for children. Please take a look at our answers below to some of these frequently asked questions, and do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to know more.
At The Dentist, our team recommends bringing children in once their first tooth has erupted, or by the time they turn one. This might seem young, but this early evaluation of their teeth and oral health is important for establishing a routine of oral care, and for us to monitor their oral health moving forward.
At home, it’s important to lead by example when it comes to establishing an oral health routine, by being enthusiastic and proactive about your children’s oral health care. Once baby teeth have started to come through, it’s important to brush the teeth twice a day with a small smear of fluoride toothpaste. This will help get them used to brushing their teeth regularly as well as help maintain their oral health.
The most important treatment we offer is regular dental examinations. During these examinations, we’ll inspect their mouths and be able to offer recommendations for at-home care or further treatment as needed.
If your child is older, we may also recommend fluoride treatment and sometimes take X-rays, if we deem it necessary for further examination. In older children and teenagers, we’ll also be able to keep an eye on whether or not orthodontic treatment might be necessary.
As with all our patients, our care for children begins with preventive care. There will be cases, however, where we have to undertake restorative treatments in order to maintain your children’s overall oral health. This could include fillings for example.
