We marched and trained as soldiers until I was seconded to a military hospital, after which I was soon sent off to take over the dental clinic in Simon’s Town, the South African naval base. After the Soweto riots, I found myself applying for a job in England, where I found my home in London.
I bought my first practice in 1979 and soon set up my second practice in Woodside Park in 1981, now 40 years ago. In 1988 I came to Bishops Stortford and bought a 2 man part-time surgery, which soon grew and in 1995 I bought 66 South Street and expanded the practice to 9 surgeries.
My personal skills were never neglected and after placing implants as early as 1987, as soon as CADCAM (Cerec) was invented I found myself amongst the first students of this technology in 1994, but to do this other skills needed refining and I soon joined the BSOS (British Society of Occlusal Studies)
My real interest was complete restoration of the neglected mouth, but without 3D imaging, I felt the profession was struggling, and that is why I was one of the first to purchase a CBCT scanner in 2004. At last, we could diagnose in 3D.
I have also attended many courses in improving Root Canal Treatment and with the improving rotary instruments my ability soon grew. So much so that I very often get those cases which are almost too far gone.
As you can see dentistry was not just my life but, with my very wonderful patients, a passion! I am now a young 70-year old looking forward to comradeship with my colleagues as well as helping my next patient.
